Reading Notes A W02: Introduction...and (rest of the titles that are headers)

Reading Notes A
Week #2

Introduction:

Interesting Quote pg. 92   -" the famous Dictionary defined reason as 'the power by which mans deduces one proposition from another, or proceeds from premises to consequences". And I like this approach because he used evidence to prove his point further.

On pg.93     -a piece of the text talks about how Enlightenment thinkers chose that they could make their own decisions and basically didn't need anyones advice. They wouldn't go ask a preset or a king but believe in their own authority.

Also on pg.92      -the text refers to Deists and how their belief was more like there is evil in the world  because God is the watch keeper and instead of constantly checking his watch he just twists it then leaves it alone. And the same with the earth their was evil because God created us and in the past he interacted with us but now he just watches from a far. And we have total free will.

On pg.102   -A piece of text made me think that Immanuel Kant created media because his argument was that debate was ideal in order to being your journey to enlightenment. The text also quoted that " The insistence on rational public argument gained strength as literary rates rose, and more people eagerly entered into debates about law, politics, and science". Showing how is comments created a uproar in the community and people began to educate themselves and also people wanting to read newspapers .
The Discourse Method
on pg. 110  -Rene Descartesintroduced the discourse method that I really enjoy the method because it is basically saying that humans didn't really know anything and since we make decisions sometimes using critical and rational thinking the truth can only be grounded by certainty. Like we know the sun is here to keep us warm but that doesn't mean its made out of fire until we prove this through certain truth with evidence.

David Hume

-Interesting how since David Hume wouldn't say he believed in God many began to think he was an atheists from not answering the question and also from his trusting only observable facts.

On the same pg of 129 - David Hume affirmed a racial hierarchy making me believe that he thought his race was higher than Africa people but opposed slavery. Although in my opinion it is great he sees slavery the same as me in being disgusting and corrupting. I don't agree that he believed the hierarchy when he barely had limited experience with African people. Seems not backed by any facts coming from a enlightened person.

 Aphra Behn

-This whole part of the reading assignment grabbed my attention from just hearing a summarization of the author Aphra Behn and how see created this fictional story of a slave who was originally a prince, being tricked and sold into slavery. To later lead a revolt with other slaves against the savage slavery time he lived in. Prince Oroonoko.
